University students help investors make decisions

By ROSIBEL PACHECO DE GUTIERREZ

University students in cooperation with local businessmen put their studies to work last week and made an interesting presentation titled Investment Projects at the Hotel Clarion. The students are taking Project Formulation and Evaluation, a required course of the Public Accounting Program of the National University of Honduras.

Presentations included in the event were in the areas of marketing studies, the behavior of demand, financial analysis and investment planning, formulating results projections and general balances, as well as discussions on aggregate value, point of equilibrium, calculation of internal rate of yield and present net value, recovering investments in a timely manner, and appreciability of a project, which is to say changing conditions of price, cost and demand, and analyzing the potential income from the project in consideration.

Many aspects of the projects drew attention from large and respected social institutions, including the Society of Friends of Children (Sociedad Amigos de Niņos or S.A.N.) and the association Share (Compartir) Honduras. Honduras This Week interviewed the administrator of Share. He stated that there is a real need for institutions such as his not to continue to depend on international donations in the long run, but instead generate income through self sustainable projects. Ms. Alba Mateus of S.A.N. expressed that "If our institutions generate resources which we use to self finance, we can expand our aid programs." In other words, the formula has changed so that instead of receiving to give, one needs to produce, and teach how to produce, and in this manner aid will be most effective.

Every project was presented by a group of young students, and at the end of the exposition they answered questions from those present as well as responding to the honest and professional criticism of University Professor Gustavo Rivera. It is from this type of event that the gap between Honduran society and the National University of Honduras will be closed. The participating youth are contributing their knowledge and efforts to national investments, and are taking an active part in the making of decisions that will help strengthen small businesses, as well as investment environment in general.

One of the projects underway by S.A.N., known by the name "Manjares" is a project based on providing packed lunches to offices that are served in work areas, providing buffet lunches for special events and making ready to go lunches, offered at this event's facilities, as well as being available to the general public. The social impact of this project is to teach advanced level cooking to the women and adolescents involved. They are also involved in the already existent "Leggol Hospitality and Lodging Center" project. This center is already open and functioning, but probably will shortly be converted into a productive project that will provide hospitality services, religious functions and events, as well as tourist excursions. Another center, the Santa Rosa de Lima Clinic, located near Moroceli, offers various medical services including a general physician, a dentist, labor and delivery, emergencies, and a laboratory. Finally, the group provides assistance and training to single mothers.

The organization COMPARTIR (Share) is interested in the cultivation of shrimp, and the feasibility study presented by the students at the conference was well met with the approval of the investors.
