The Honduran Cookbook: a key to gastronomical riches

Honduran CultureOne of the most important aspects of any country’s culture is directly linked to the culinary costumes of its inhabitants, and even more so the evolution these habits go through as time goes by. In 1997, Valentina Zaldivar de Farach published the first edition of the book titled: The Honduran Cookbook or El Cocinero Hondureno. The book is a bilingual, historic compilation of valuable information in regards to the way Hondurans cook today as a result of their roots, the influence of the Spanish conquerors and of the various groups of immigrants that came to this land at different times.Full article by SUYAPA CARIAS

The not-so-mellow lethal yellow

Environment in HondurasBorder disputes and protectionist policies may keep economic enterprises from freely crossing international boundaries in some regions of the Caribbean, but such is not the case with environmental phenomena. Lethal Yellowing (LY) disease is one such example, moving across the region with an ease that would be the envy of modern day globalization proponents. Special to HTW by RORY O’CONNOR

The supermarket criminal, the super economy
Honduras This Week - Opinions and EditorialsWe estimate that at least 50 percent of the national production is distributed among supermarkets, supply markets, grocery stores and other similar retail businesses. While Hondurans own 60 percent of these businesses, the rest belong to foreign capital. Foreign investors acquire at least half of their supplies in their countries of origin, and do not allow Honduran products to compete within their establishments. Full editorial

Closing the knowledge gap between rich and poor: What’s to Stop Us?

Honduras This Week - Opinions and EditorialsToday, the key role of education in economic development is well established. It has been studied, analyzed, documented and supported by historical facts. The theories that emphasize the contribution of human capital to economic growth received great support from the experience of the East Asian countries: Hong Kong, Taiwan, The Republic of Korea and Singapore. According to a United Nations report, these countries, which presented low growth and development in the sixties, were able to close, in a few decades, almost all gaps that separated them from developed countries.

The Law Says...

Dear HTW:

I have an inheritance from my mother’s estate and as I live in the U.S., I gave my sister my Power of Attorney to represent me in the proceedings. It happens that I think it would be best to terminate this arrangement but her son, who is a recent graduate from law school, tells me that I need to grant another person in Honduras a Power of Attorney before I can revoke the Power of Attorney to my sister. OR, my sister must expressly renounce it. Answer in Opinion &  Editorial

Travel & Tourism in Honduras

Hot off the press, the Third Maya Conference is scheduled for May 15 - 17 in Copan Ruinas. Last years conference was a tremendous and monumental success. Hundreds of Maya scholars, academics and just plain aficionados participated in a plethora of conferences and events offered by some of the top experts in the field and they were wined and dined in true Copan style. Look for upcoming ads for the event in Archeology Magazine a principal sponsor of the event. It is recommended to reserve early as the event sold out quickly last year and procrastinators were forced onto a waiting list.
