Nicaraguan efforts to explore petroleum threaten Honduran sovereignty
TEGUCIGALPA — During the past few days, a dispute between Honduras and Nicaragua has intensified as Nicaragua threatens to grant multinational corporations permission to carry out explorations for petroleum in maritime areas that Honduras claims as its own.
Honduras claims that the maritime border between the two countries was established as the 15º N Latitude. This demarcation has been respected by Nicaragua until the last few years. Presently Nicaragua claims that the demarcation is the 17º N, not the original 15º N latitude.

San Diegans respond to national emergency of Dengue Fever epidemic in Honduras
Gary Becks and Wendell Cutting of San Diego based Rescue Task Force (RTF) arrived in Honduras this week with medical relief team that will travel to the “Moskito” Coast Jungle to respond to that country’s nationally declared emergency of an overwhelming outbreak of dengue fever. All hospitals in Honduras are overflowing with dengue victims, 60% of which are children. Mexican, Guatemalan and El Salvadoran emergency teams are also rushing to provide help. While those countries are working the urban areas, Rescue Task Force will work with people in the jungles and remote areas. Dengue Fever is caused by mosquitoes, which have bred in stagnant water and unsanitary conditions. Dengue is often called “the bone crushing disease” and causes a horrible death.

Networking for the good of the community
One of the definitions for the word “network” is “a group of cooperating people”. In December 2001 a group of cooperating people were brought together by Dr. Luis Castro to meet with Mary Dean, a frequent visitor from Austin, Texas, to discuss possible interest in obtaining a van equipped for providing dental services. Ms. Dean knew that such a van existed. Dr. Castro had mentioned in a private discussion with Ms. Dean that local dentists were short of supplies and lacked adequate equipment for serving outlying areas and schools.

According to the local saying (which I made up today), “As tourism goes in Guatemala.... So goes tourism in Honduras”. Tourism is stronger in Guatemala and a large percentage of Honduras bound traveler’s wind up crossing directly into Honduras via the border crossings at Agua Caliente, Ocotepeque and El Florido, Copan Ruinas. In addition a small number also fly from Guatemala City to San Pedro Sula. If recent numbers are any indicator tourism in Guatemala is doing quite well these days thank you.
