Police Forces responsible for extra-judicial deaths
According
to local media reports, the Police Sub-Commissioner Maria Luisa Borjas
denounced police and security forces for being responsible for at least 20
extra-judicial deaths during the last four years. Borjas, unconfirmed Chief
of Internal Affairs for the Secretary of Health stated that “high-up
executive and administrative authorities from the Ministry of Security and
the National Preventive Police Force are implicated in the crimes.” She also
said that “persons executed were either criminals or alleged criminals, and
the participation of authorities in their deaths was by execution, omission,
complicity or cover-up.”

Fisherman Act to Save Lobsters, Live
The
fishermen of Cayos Cochinos, an archipelago off Honduras’ northern Miskito
Coast, recently decided that the regulations protecting their island homes
did not go far enough. They took the bold step of banning all scuba diving
lobster, a move that will mean less money for the already low-income
residents, but will guarantee long-term survival for the marine resources on
which they depend and result in far less risk to the fishermen’s health.

The Migra

Ever since biblical times, immigration has been relevant to mankind. God
commanded Moses to lead Jewish people on an exodus to the Promised Land. The
countries of India and Pakistan suffered a painful immigration. The Spaniards to
America and the Jewish people back to Israel.

How a Proper Objective Loses Out to Improper Methods
in Crime Control
A
few weeks ago, in connection with Presidente Ricardo Maduro’s “Zero Tolerance”
fight against crime, I editorialized in this publication, “If the Maduro forces
are truly serious about putting an end to the Honduras crime wave, they will
find the answers they seek in better schools, organized apprentice programs, and
youth activity programs that provide creative and instructive alternatives to
street gangs, anti-social conditioning and the examples of successful
criminality that abound wherever they look”. Full

Letter from Honduras: On Deadeye and Patriotism
It
has been a boisterous week. First, one of my sister-in-laws, Maria returned home
and announced she had bought a TV and was bringing it to the house. My wife, one
of many sisters, went berserk. “For God’s sake,” she said. “What are you
thinking? What about shoes? Clothes for the kids?” She has a point. Maria has
four kids by four different men and has shown no interest in looking after any
them, except the latest because the father has stuck with her.

Guillermo
Anderson will perform at the Pico Bonito Lodge
Come
see Guillermo Anderson and his band live at The Lodge at
Pico Bonito on Saturday, October 5, 2002. Guillermo
Anderson is probably the premier Honduran pop musician right now. He plays an
infectious blend of Caribbean flavored pop and Latin flavored ballads guaranteed
to get you dancing. The band is fresh back from a tour in Holland, where they
played at various important cultural events in Amsterdam.

Let’s
call him Roy. His sister, a full-blooded Honduran, was naturalized as a
U.S. citizen, and once worked in the FBI and the DEA. Now, by choice, she
is pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a movie star. She appeared once
in Silk Stalkings, a trendy detective T.V. show of the 90’s and another
time in the famous series E.R. in a minor role. Roy’s brother is a
dentist, also a naturalized U.S. citizen and soon to be an Official FIFA
soccer referee. And his mother is a Honduran who, for twenty years has
lived and worked in the U.S. cleaning houses, apartments and offices, and
now runs a cleaning service. BY JORGE FLORES

This week being the one-year anniversary of the
September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., let’s briefly check out how
tourism in Europe has been affected. Scheduled flights from the U.S.
to Europe are down 13 percent from last year. In Britain, the number
of American tourists is 10 percent less than in 2000. In France, tour
operators saw a record drop-off in American visitors of almost a
third. In addition to the effects of the September 11 attacks, the
global economic downturn and stockmarket slide have played a role in
the worldwide tourism slump.
