Building communities, building hope
TEGUCIGALPA
— Four and a half years after the Hurricane Mitch crisis and Honduras is
still not fully recovered and functional. To date only 40 percent of the
total government relief funds have been spent on account of the
painstakingly slow pace of official administration. Though no one can
say how long it will be before all the victims of this terrible tragedy
receive their benefits, the gap is being filled by the private efforts
on the part of organizations overseen by Michael Miller.

Mining corps lose the Midas touch

Boy on road
through mine
The
year 2003 has seen the mining industry come under increasing criticism
from community groups, environmentalists and journalists. The sector,
already frequently criticized for its social and environmental
disruption, has been accused in a recent article in the daily La Tribuna
of providing little economic benefit for Honduras and thus providing few
excuses for the environmental degradation and social disruption that it
causes. By

Combating Corruption In Nicaragua:
The Problem Of Corrupt Democrats
This
article is a transcript of a speech delivered by President Bolanos at the
U.S. Department of State on February 25, 2003, where he was awarded the
Democracy Service Medal by the National Endowment for Democracy. Prior to
serving as Vice-President and President of Nicaragua, Enrique Bolanos headed
the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP), an umbrella organization
of Nicaragua’s private sector and a CIPE partner. COSEP worked courageously
to promote the ideals of liberty, democracy, free enterprise, protection of
private property, human rights, and political and economic pluralism,
challenging both authoritarian and Marxist regimes.

A somber anniversary: 1958-1997
Unavenged but not forgotten, Candido Amador continues
to inspire his people from the grave
On
April 12, 1997, as night draped the village of Copan Ruinas in a mantle of
darkness, Candido Amador Recinos, a charismatic champion of Indian rights
and a rising star in the Maya-Chorti leadership, was brutally, senselessly
murdered. Unsolved and unpunished, his assassination has plunged indigenous
and Black communities alike under a pall of fear and suspicion. In
galvanizing Honduras’ minorities, the crime — then the 25th slaying of an
indigenous leader in less than five years — has also put an end to decades
of silence, irresolution and self-restraint. Cándido’s death has re-awakened
tribal pride, buoyed ethnic unity and fed a tide of revulsion and impatience
at Honduras’ Byzantine justice system.

Economic deliberations
In
light of the current global economic recession and the disruption in current
world orders, it seems an appropriate time for an extensive study into the
economic injustices created by our developed nations. Unfortunately all the
economic advantages belong exclusively to the rich countries of the world.
Surely our concern should be to find an economic balance through the
satisfaction of basic human needs?

Radio broadcast math lessons promote fun learning
Children
don´t even realize they are working while they learn.
TEGUCIGALPA
— Teaching math is not easy under even the best of conditions, but
imagine the task of giving the little tykes of Honduras these essential
skills faced with a chronically under-funded educational system.

AIDS educational seminar in Roatan
ROATAN
— Shortly before Semana Santa at the municiple building of Roatan, four
groups of about 30 people each gathered to attend seminars in which
problems such as HIV/AIDS were discussed. Child abuse, homosexuality,
drug addiction and the dangers of sharing needles were cited as the
primary causes for its transmission. The stress was on prevention and
how and where to find help and advise.

The “Sun” rises in Roatan

The exotic food buffet appeals to all tastes
ROATAN — The Norwegian Sun
cruise ship towers over the little low-rise town of Coxen Hole. Each
time she comes in proves exciting to the townspeople. She dwarfs the
huge docking pier and to watch her maneuver is a favorite pastime of the
young and old alike.
