Honduras This Week National NewsA black cloud appears suddenly on a sunny afternoon. A suffocating stench and deafening noise fill the air. But no one notices. Why? Because this isn’t the opening to a science fiction film: It is just a regular occurrence on a Honduran city street. By JENNIFER OLADIPO

EDITORIAL

Fifteen at last

Honduras This Week - Opinions and EditorialsJust fifteen years ago we were putting the final touches on the first weekly Honduran newspaper published in the English language. The idea came to us when we were working at the Honduran embassy in Rome, Italy. We observed with envy that the rest of Central America had excellent information services. We saw the Sandinista flag in Plaza Navona and had to listen to the organized propaganda from the Sandinista government. Tegucigalpa: Still Growing up at 425
Honduran Culture“Beautiful, indolent, graceful, Tegucigalpa there peeks, Like a dove’s nest, on a flowered branch”. In these verses, poet Rafael Heliodoro Valle honors Tegucigalpa’s beauty and the loftiness of its mountains, 3000 ft above sea level. In a controversial letter to the Editor, which appeared in Reader’s Forum, W.E. Gutman stated that “culture breeds culture.” True in many respects, but the statement, however, needs clarification. It is not a lifelong sentence to uncultured darkness for those unfortunate enough to have been born into poor, uneducated families. And, it’s certainly not a privilege of the few moneyed people because, as Mr. Gutman points out, we’ve all met “rich dunces.” By JORGE GALLARDO RIUS

Copan Update
By HOWARD ROSENZWEIG

Travel & Tourism in HondurasTemptation Island, the mother of all reality shows is back for another season on NBC. In addition to a horde of scantily clad, seriously extroverted, adrenaline and hormone crazed Gen X’ers the show features prominently a beautiful, idyllic Caribbean location-which is none other than Roatan, Honduras’ very own fun in the sun tropical paradise. Roatan’s tourism sector is hoping for nothing less than a mini-boom in tourism as a result of the exposure the island will receive in the coming weeks on US television. Full Update
