Habeas Data a la Honduras: the start of an information dictatorship?

Honduras This Week National NewsSometimes, Truth is fragile, like the newborn shoot from a plant, emerging from the ground. It needs to be protected from the elements from being destroyed, sometimes by a wall of stone. Javier Darío Restrepo, 2004 This week, the Habeas Data law, to be ratified any time now into Article 182 of the Honduran Constitution by the Honduran National Congress, was condemned by local and international organizations as evidence of a serious threat to freedom of expression in the country. Bora & the “H” Face Colombians

Honduras This Week National NewsIt was a rare cold and rainy night, last Wednesday the 18th of February at the National Stadium “Tiburcio Carias Andino” in Tegucigalpa for the “friendly” clash between Latin American rivals Honduras and Colombia. While the stadium can accommodate up to 32,000 fans, the weather conspired to keep the bulk of the normally enthusiastic Honduran fans away, and only 6,000 braved the freezing weather to support the Honduras national team, affectionately know as the “H”. ABORTION OR PESTICIDE?

Honduras This Week - Opinions and EditorialsOverpopulation, as seen by neo politicians who stereotype men with tenacity and have self granted the right to manipulate world population, is a rope around the neck, in a very short term. In Honduras, 20% of pregnancies are lost due to the malformation of the fetus, malnutrition, bad medication, radiation, vaginal infections and chickenpox. In the “Hospital Escuela,” approximately 35 births are reported, most of them coming from women under 19. Full Editorial

Finally, We Have a Real International Airport

Travel & Tourism in HondurasWhat is an airport without a great restaurant to visit while awaiting your departure call? Until now, travelers have had to make do with one fast food vendor while using the airport in San Pedro Sula, and although Wendy’s does a great job, if looking for a full menu and some international treats, you did not find them at this airport. Now however, you may climb the ramp and then the stairs to The MARISCOS Y MAS Restaurant on the tip-top floor of the airport, and eat to your hearts content. By Don Pearly

Church of Love and Life Saving Street Kids

“Don Juan” and six children who were rescued from life on the streets

Honduran CultureOn a winding road in the hills above the city stands a modest church which, from the outside, appears deserted. After knocking on the door for a few minutes the sound of little feet can eventually be heard pounding against the concrete. The sound continues to get louder until the door finally flies open and two children burst outside, throwing their arms around you and squealing with delight. “What’s your name?!” They shriek as they grab hold of your hand and lead you running through the hallways to the place they call home. Sexo, Pudor y Lagrimas - Sex, Modesty and Tears

Honduran CultureA Mexican play, produced by a Honduran company and reviewed by an English writer. Luckily, ARTEATRO’s current production of Antonio Serrano’s Sex, Modesty and Tears focuses on the universal subject of love so the company are confident that all audience members will identify with at least one character and find the problems and issues presented in the play familiar. According to the play’s program: “The play presents situations that occur in the lives of any couple, in any part of the world.” Directed by Carlos Rodriguez Franco, Sex, Modesty and Tears “presents a series of tangled passions narrated in a humorous form. It understands infidelity, jealousy and provocation.”  By Sophie Anscombe

Love is a Many Confusing Thing

Honduran CultureIn an era when “casual” sex makes romantic love look like a myth, Honduras has transformed the 14th of February into the day of “Love and friendship”. The local media, especially the commercial , promote the “month of love and friendship” giving what is properly known as “romantic love” less and less relevance as time goes by. By ALEJANDRA PAREDES
