Economic potential of migration not to be underestimated

A group of deported Honduran immigrants arriving at the Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa.

Honduras This Week National NewsThe most positive aspect of migration is its economic potential. That is the conclusion of the report "Migration and remittances in Honduras" presented in Tegucigalpa by the German Development Agency GTZ and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) right before Christmas. In the debate, there is a lot of focus on the negative aspects of migration. For example, immigrants deported from the U.S. are described as criminals and the people receiving remittances from relatives abroad are blamed for using the money for consumption rather than to invest in their future. "The paradox is that these people that risk their lives, maintain the macro economy of the country and that is why we have to improve their situation," said Jan Rogge who works as a consultant for both GTZ and IOM. What will it take to transform Honduran prisons?

Entrance to Tamara prison.

Honduras This Week National NewsIt is common knowledge that the condition of prisons in Latin America is reaching breaking point. Jails controlled by inmates rather than prison guards, gang conflict and murders occurring within prison walls and the incessant spread of disease are stories that constantly hit the media, yet nothing seems to be done and nobody really knows the difference between the hard facts and sensationalised stories. When journalists are allowed inside Latin prisons, they are often shown a rose-tinted version of prison-life and provided with questionable facts. One non-governmental organisation - the Centro de Prevencion Tratamento y Rehabilitacion du las Victimas de la Tortura y sus Familiares (CPTRT) - however, works within Honduran prisons and are one of the few external parties who see the real side of the story. Honduras This Week National NewsA group of 55 people spent the weekend of December 15th learning about and counting birds as part of the 13th Annual Tela Bay Christmas Bird Count, organized by the environmental NGO PROLANSATE and Lancetilla Botanical Garden, both located in Tela, on the North Coast. The event consisted of visiting two national parks and the Botanical Garden to observe birds for 12 hours, noting both species and number of individuals seen or heard. The data collected serves to analyze the current environmental situation as indicated by the presence of certain migratory and resident species. This type of event also inspires the participants to continue this nature-based activity and help to protect the areas where they can enjoy this activity. By Sarah Stewart

The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux

Patrick Ahern

Honduras This Week

Patrick Ahern/Honduras This Week
A petroglyph by the Rio Platano seen from a 'pipante', the traditional dugout canoe used in la Mosquitia.

Travel & Tourism in HondurasMosquito Coast by Paul Theroux is a well-written, fascinating and disturbing novel. It is the story of the "experience" the obnoxious anti-hero of the novel, Allie Fox, drags his wife and four children through. Described through the observant eyes of Charlie, the oldest of the children at about age 12, we meet the frustrated inventor or at least fix it all (and "know it all") Fox on a farm in Massachusetts. He is totally disgruntled with life in the US and refuses to let his children be "corrupted' by school, television, religion and commercialism. Although published in 1981 the issues are incredibly similar to today. Ranting against materialism in the US and the high price of gasoline ($1.10 a gallon!), Fox says, "I blame the oil companies, the car industry, big business....and I blame myself for not devising a cheaper method of extracting oil from shale. We've got trillions of tons of shale in this country." By Patrick Ahern

Meet Ian Brownlee -

Consul General Ian Brownlee will be returning to the U.S. as his contract ends in six months' time.

Travel & Tourism in HondurasWhen Americans visit the US Embassy to get their needs met, they most likely have had to deal with Ian Brownlee. After a rocky start of our journey to get my little Kenia a visa to see her new relatives in the US, I eventually got to know Ian. I am happy to give the opportunity for other Americans to get to know him better. By Bruce Starr

HAPPY 2007

Travel & Tourism in HondurasAs we sit in the newsroom watching the Associated Press, CNN and United Press headlines stream by, we are reminded why we are living here on Roatan in Honduras. Floods, typhoons, capsizing ferry boats, famine, closed airports due to heavy snow, draught, epidemics, civil wars, nuclear testing, hangings, murders, muggings, mudslides, mass pile-ups on the interstate, I.R.S. audits, earthquakes, tsunami, kidnappings, volcano eruptions, home intrusions, and police brutality to name but a few things happening at all hours of the day and nighttime around the world. By Don Pearly

Travel & Tourism in HondurasThe always fluctuating lempira has become something of a rock of stability in the past 18 months with an official exchange rate of Lps 18.89 to the dollar remaining unchanged. According to the Honduran Central bank, a big part of the reason for this monetary stability is the healthy amount of foreign reserves that the bank maintains in deposit which reached $2.7 billion in December 2006. Inflation reached 5% in 2006 according to bank statistics. Full Article

Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.

-- Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, S.Taylor Coleridge

Honduran CultureWhat could ever be lonelier than circling the globe single-handedly in a small boat?  Although hundreds have attempted it, and many have actually done it, there are three people who I'd like to mention in today's article. The first person to ever complete a globe-girdling voyage, all alone, was Joshua Slocum. The youngest ever to go at it was Robin Lee Graham. And the wisest was Sir Francis Chichester. Also, I should point out, all three were accomplished writers. Full Article
