Lower fuel prices top achievement during first year of government

After a somewhat chaotic first year in government, Manuel Zelaya has received a lot of sympathy lately thanks to the decrease in fuel prices.

Lowering the fuel prices, maintaining financial stability and neutralizing the impatience of many sectors of civil society such as teachers, taxi drivers and doctors. Those are the three most important achievement of the government of Manuel Zelaya, which celebrates one year in power on January 27th, according to political analyst Juan Ramon Martinez. Liberal leader Jorge Yllescas, on the other side, has difficulties finding any positive aspects at all of the current government.By Anette Emanuelsson

Honduran reforestation project to export carbon credits

Nine different types of plants are currently grown in the green house, for example Virola koschnyi, in English known as wild nutmeg, which is used to make plywood.

The recently formed Honduran company Pico Bonito S. de R. L. is the fourth forestry project worldwide that has been certified as a producer of carbon credits in accordance with the Kyoto protocol. The joint project between Fundación Parque Nacional Pico Bonito (FUPNAPIB) and U.S. non-profit organization Ecologic Development Fund consists in buying 2,500 hectares of deforested land in the buffer zone surrounding the Pico Bonito National Park and reforest it with indigenous trees such as mahogany, rosewood and cedar. The Tegucigalpa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIT) and the Chamber of Commerce of Panama invited small and medium sized Honduran businesses to a presentation on the Expocomer trade exhibition, which will be held in Panama March 7 to 10. The proposed Rio Amarillo site for the Copan airport is approximately 30 minutes from the ruins at Copan and set in narrow valley on the road from Copan Ruinas - La Entrada.
