One of several vendors in "El Valle" offering handmade hammocks.

Travel & Tourism in HondurasA quick 22 kilometers north of Tegucigalpa, nestled in pine-covered hills, is the easy, tranquil town of Valle de Angeles (known as simply “El Valle” by the locals, pronounced “el Va-yay”). This irresistible hamlet lives up to every expectation and more one would expect of a small, colonial Honduran town in the hills surrounding Tegucigalpa. It’s no wonder President Zelaya has declared it an official tourist town. Full Article

Life in Rural Honduras: A Holiday Season with My Cows

Robert Conklin
Honduras This Week

Honduras This Week National Newshalf century ago, most American extended-families could count some farmers among their members. Most of the family knew and accepted that the farmers among them would not be paying a visit at holiday time. If any visiting with the farmers took place, it would be the townsfolk who would have to be driving out to visit the likes of “Uncle Fred on the farm.” Dairy farmers might be able to finish morning chores by 9:00 a.m., but then they would have to be close to the barn again by 3:00 p.m. to prepare for evening milking. (A friend of mine called it the “Twice-a-day Dairy Barn Fifty,” to account for his fifty cows and the round-the-barn circuit.) These days, Brad in town would be more likely to whine that Uncle Fred should visit him because of that little TV that Fred has. Full Article

The Venezuela of Chavez: Part III

Central American NewsVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez based his proposal for a new constitution on various basic cornerstones, one being the principal of territorialism. Chavez proposed to develop Venezuela to its full potential, building and rebuilding if necessary. Many Venezuelans do not understand the concept of an “exclusive economic zone.” Venezuela’s national petroleum company, PDV, for example, performs its oil exploration at 50 meters, and Brazil is now exploring at 7000 meters.
