Travel Essay: A Londoner stuck in the rainforest, Part 1

Young girl in Brus Lagoon, La Moskitia stands in the shade of her home.

Honduras This Week National NewsPresented with the opportunity of a guided trip into the Honduran rainforest in your second week in the country, you feel pretty lucky. Especially when all the natives around you are saying that they’ve never been themselves. That’s a chance you can’t pass up, right? So, I said ‘yes.’ I paid the rather large fee for the two tiny planes it took me to get there from Tegus and I packed my bags with everything I imagined I’d possibly need in the rainforest: bug spray and extra strong bug spray, a mosquito net, bite cream – there’s a theme here – bottled water, chocolate biscuits, malaria tablets, diarrhea tablets, headache tablets, multivitamins, plasters, sunblock, long-sleeved shirts, salt sachets for the leeches – obviously – ‘sensible shoes’, a big, waterproof raincoat, my camera and lots and lots of freezer bags to keep everything dry.Full Article

Clarification from the French embassy

French Embassy

Honduras This Week National NewsIn response to statements made by the Honorable Patricia Rodas, President of the Central Executive Office of the Liberal Party (CCEPL), the French Embassy in Honduras wishes to clarify the following:

The journalists who reported that the president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, was drunk at the end of an interview with Russian president Vladimir Putin, have since retracted their statement, having admitted that it was false, and have also publicly apologized.

For the record, President Sarkozy does not drink alcohol, during presidential duties nor in private.

Reiterating its friendship and respect to Madame Rodas and to Minister Milton Jimenez Puerto, the Embassy of France categorically confirms that this reference to the French president is erroneous and should not have been verbalized.

Corruption: Special Report

Don Pearly
Honduras This Week

Honduras This Week National NewsIf there is one word that explains why third world countries may always remain third world countries, that word might well be “corruption.” Corruption takes the form of many things such as the acceptance by a lonely and bored traffic policeman of a small amount of money to put away his ticket book, all the way up to a guilty as sin murderer being cut loose to go have a good laugh in a bar.

Message from the mountain: FARC rebels release hostages

James W. Bodden
Honduras This Week

ManuelMarylanda
James W. Bodden/Honduras This Week
FARC rebels released long-held hostages last week.

Central American News“The Colombian insurgency has given us the coordinates from the mountains of Colombia…” The words of Venezuela’s president Hugo Chavez set in motion a chain of events that catalyzed the departure of two Venezuelan helicopters from the town of Villavicencio, fifty miles south of Bogotá. The pilots lifted off with no pre-arranged flight plan; the secret coordinates identifying the location of two hostages in the jungle deep were only disclosed as the helicopters took flight. The hostage hand over was veiled by the thick vegetation of inhospitable, guerrilla-controlled territory. It was a secret event; precautions are necessary for the embattled insurgents, their military adversaries are always watching. Hours later in Caracas, Mr. Chavez declared the operation complete and successful, anointing the hostages new life after captivity, “I told tem, ’Welcome to life, welcome to life.’” Full Article

CGC Manager Gustavo Suazo ready to chauffeur guests in one the club's electric golf carts.

Travel & Tourism in HondurasThe dirt road winding its way on the outskirts of Comayagua is rocky and rough, but the effort used to drive may well be worth it. This particular road leads to the Comayagua Golf Club (CGC), hidden behind cement walls and steel doors with only its logo giving those who approach a hint of what lies beyond.Full Article

Travel & Tourism in HondurasShopping in Copán Ruinas and other small, mid-sized towns and large cities in Honduras has always been a hit or miss proposition - either they have what you are looking for, or they don’t. Small town, rural Honduras has historically been dominated by the ubiquitous neighborhood ‘pulperia ‘ as they are called. Sometimes no bigger than a closet or as big as a small New York City pharmacy, they are convenient, close and usually stock the basic necessities of everyday life: aspirin, soft drinks, candy, meat, cheese, bread, eggs, milk, veggies, matches, machetes , you get the idea. Political Torture

EditorialDuring the month of December, politicians presented a project to the National Congress, a project they called electoral reforms. The majority of the Congress passed the reforms. A minority of 25 congressmen/women belonging to the five political parties rejected the reforms, claiming they were “unpatriotic.” Full Article
