Creation of special national park only way to save mahogany

s8-8-31a.jpg (34716 bytes)This unusual red flower is just one of the many exotic and not so exotic plants growing at the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens, near Tela. In addition to plants, the gardens also house a research station of the National Forestry School, which could play an important role in saving the mahogany tree. (Photo by Mario Gutierrez.)

Environment in HondurasHaving just read the biography of Velasquez by Guillermo Yuscaran, I'm reminded of how Honduras' most famous painter loved the pines around San Antonio de Oriente, as he found them when he came to San Antonio in 1930. That pueblo has changed since then as has most of Honduras, especially Tegucigalpa, from when I first saw the city in 1975. Antonio Velasquez painted from memory how the landscape looked in 1930 and probably of how he would like to see it now, with no scars from tractors skidding logs across the land.

Yuscaran's biography made me think it is a pity Velasquez did not know and paint the tropical humid forests of the Honduran North Coast, where s8-8-31a.jpg (34716 bytes)those giant mahogany trees grew, so he could have preserved for us images of a fast disappearing biosphere, that once gone will never again reappear. Lessons to be learned from Comayaguela market
Honduras This Week - Opinions and Editorials
As the messages about the growing epidemic of crime and lawlessness swarm around us, it is important to keep some perspective. One way to do that is to visit the famous market in Comayaguela, which is actually made up of a number of markets. This might seem a strange place to go in quest of something so elusive as perspective. It is noisy, hot, dirty, smelly, and over-crowded. It overwhelms the senses, and the nectar of its ambience is not sweet. Full perspective in Opinions & Editorial By ERLING DUUS

A special message to our readers
Honduras This Week - Opinions and Editorials
Recently, two English-language weekly newspapers went bankrupt in Guatemala, despite the fact that there is a much larger expatriate population in Guatemala than in Honduras. Honduras This Week, in its 9th year of publication, struggles to survive the impact of inflation, and the high costs driven by the fact that all materials used in the publishing of a newspaper must be imported. While many people assume that HTW must be a highly profitable enterprise, the truth is that it has never done much more than break even. And even this has come at a cost.
