Bat Bulletin: conservation vital

Bats are considered keystone species of many ecosystems.

Bats have long since been misrepresented as a fierce and aggressive species with few redeeming qualities, however, in partnership with Bat Conservation International, EDUECO (an environmental organization), is creating a greater understanding of the role that bats play in forest ecosystems of Honduras.

Ecological studies have shown that if bats were to disappear altogether, as is the danger in certain parts of the world, the equilibrium of several ecosystems would be in great jeopardy.  This is known in ecology as the keystone species: a critical species in which an entire ecosystem depends.

Natural areas that have undergone severe deforestation have slowly begun to regenerate due in large part to the reintroduction of various bat species through the efforts of Bat Conservation International.

A bat box is one way to attract these helpful critters to your backyard.  If interested in receiving more information please write to the following address:  Bat Conservation Program, EDUECO S. de R.L., Apdo. Postal 353, San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
