The Great Honduras - Salvador Soccer War
PART I | PART II

Honduras is a real country. Roatan is a real island. The war that grew out of a "best out of three" soccer playoff was a real war. Which is to say that real people got themselves killed as a direct or indirect result of it. Wars do that. Even silly wars, like "The Great Futbol War" get people killed.

The people who appear in this story are/were real people. The events set forth in this story took place, but perhaps not precisely as they are described, nor in the exact sequence in which they are related. In view of this, "The Great Futbol War" is properly described as "fact-ion," which places it somewhere between "fact" and "fiction." To further clarify the term, O.Henry wrote "fiction"; Truman Capote wrote "faction"; newspaper reporters, hopefully, always write "facts."

"THE GREAT FUTBOL WAR" is presented in two segments to simplify downloading and reduce the time required to do so. To proceed to each next page, press the NEXT link at the bottom of the page. To go back in the text, press the PREVIOUS button.
