Honduras and Bay Islands Guide by Jean-Pierre Panet with Hart & Glassman Open Road Publishing, P.O. Box 11249, Cleveland Park Station, Washington, D.C. 20008. Third edition, 1995, an update revision of the excellent second edition, not a complete revision as they did when number two came out. Very comprehensive, a lot of work and research. 256 pages, great on detail and adds historical reference.

Diving and Snorkeling Guide to Roatán & Honduras' Bay Islands, by Sharon Collins, 1993, Pieces Books, Houston, Texas. Reference for diving sites and marine life. Beautiful color photos, just what the divers need. Recommended for divers and scuba enthusiasts.

La Mosquitia - A Guide to the land of savannas, rain forest, and turtle hunters by Derek Parent, self published, you can order from him directly at 134 St. George, Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada, J6K 2S6. First edition 1995. For those of you with e-mail access you can contact Derek Parent at >derekp@cam.org< He maintains a WWW site at: http://www.cam.org/~derekp/index.html

Mosquitia is a fascinating place to hike and explore, Derek's book is a must read for those going into the area. But more than that his detailed information brings this remote area of the world very much alive. Excellent reading for the adventurous.

Guatemala, Belize & Yucatan - La Ruta Maya by Tom Brosnahan, Lonely Planet, 1994 edition. Has an excellent section of interest for visitors to Copán and Esquipulas, pp. 183-194. Detailed information of the El Florido border crossing.

Central America on the Loose, 1993, The Berkeley Guides, The budget Traveler's Handbook, written by Berkeley students in association with the University of California. Published by Fodor's Travel Publications. 475 pages. Former Peace Corp members and backpackers combine to make an excellent book on economy travel. The Honduras section is written very responsibly and has information that could only be obtained by on site research. Much better approach than the Lonely Planet counterpart below.

Central America on a Shoestring, 1994, distributed by Lonely Planet Publications, 155 Filbert St. Ste. 251, Oakland, CA 94607, telephone 1-800-275-8555. Popular with the economy minded, very helpful with my updating information. Great maps, historical perspective and local insight, not as good as Honduras & Bay Islands Guide, but certainly worthwhile as long as your are careful about choosing your lodging in urban areas. 1994 edition has only cosmetic changes over 1992, probably not worthwhile to upgrade. Lists "economy" hotels that I personally consider inappropriate or dangerous for travelers. There are excellent economy hotels, it is completely unnecessary to list these types of places. Apart from this, the book is excellent.

Central America by Chickenbus, by Vivien Lougheed, 1993. Written from the viewpoint of a woman traveling alone, going economy, spending less than $10 a night for lodging. Much more security conscious than "C.A. on a Shoestring." Responsible approach warning of uncomfortable or dangerous areas. Excellent information on rural destinations. Information is dated 1993, but appears to have been gathered as early as 1991.

Latin America by Bike - a complete touring guide, by Walter Sienko, 1993. A guide to bicycling both Central and South America. Individual countries are indicated as well as preparation and equipment. ISBN 0-89886-365-1

Mexico & Central American Handbook published by Passport Books, is a reference book for all these countries. The information is good and factual, but it is printed with very small light type and difficult to read. Factual but lacking comment and personal information. 1996 edition, 929 pages, sells for $21.95. ISBN 0-8442-8882-9
